New wedding cake ideas that put a contemporary twist on traditional wedding cake designs.
So many unique wedding cake ideas have made it onto the wedding scene lately that unique is starting to become the norm. Wedding cakes have always been a showpiece, but never have they been so much fun!
Since almost anything in good taste is possible these days, we're not going to limit, categorize, or even suggest what cake ideas are best. Instead, we're just going to make this page a place for a sort of freewheeling discussion of new designs.
We've seen and continue to see so many original wedding cake designs that we just wanted to have a page where we could easily add new ideas as they come along.
Check the navbar link labeled "wedding cake pictures" if you're a more visual person. It will lead you to pages of wedding cake ideas in pictures that can help you turn your dream wedding cake in to a reality.

Below are ideas for flavors, icing, decorations, designs, toppers, presentation, and even serving ideas.
As categories and trends develop, we'll organize this page a little bit more. Also, we'll provide pictures where we can and/or links to the experts behind these great wedding cake ideas.
Email your great ideas via the contact us form below and we'll add your tip to the page as well, with full credit or anonymously - whatever you wish.
- If your wedding favors are suited for this, use them as mini wedding cake toppers on slices of wedding cake, mini cakes, or cupcake wedding cakes. For example, you can easily use cookie cutter wedding favors as a topper on a slice of cake. You could also use mini wedding cake candles as a mini topper.
- Have a smaller showpiece wedding cake and then put mini wedding cakes or tiers in the middle of guest tables as a centerpiece. Surround them with votive candles or tealights.
- Some wedding cake designs will allow you to put the tealights or votive candles right ON the wedding cake (square wedding cakes lend themselves well to this idea).
- Square wedding cakes or tiers are being used to put a contemporary spin on simple elegance. Rolled fondant (smooth) icing with ribbon and/or bows creates a Christmas present appearance.
- Another variation uses buttercream icing in a basket weave texture. Flowers look great on these southern style wedding cake designs.
- Taking these wedding cake ideas one step further, some couples are rotating every other layer 45 degrees. Think of looking down on the cake from the ceiling and seeing the tiers as square, diamond, square, diamond and so on.
- Chocolate wedding cakes are climbing in popularity. You can always have a different flavor for your groom's cake or a small serving cake for those guests that don't like chocolate.
- White chocolate shaped candies are being used on chocolate wedding cakes to help carry a theme. For example, shell shapes on beach wedding cakes.
- In the flavor department, rolled chocolate is being used as icing! Here's why. It has a smooth texture like rolled fondant but tastes much better.
- And cheesecakes are being used as wedding cakes as well. From the outside, though, you can't tell the difference.
- If you're making a cupcake wedding cake or other do it yourself wedding cake ideas, try using a recipe for yogurt cake or creme cake to make your cupcakes. You'll be able to make them ahead of time but they'll stay moist, unlike many cake recipes. Search for recipes on the internet and experiment until you find one that suits you. You'll look like a pro and your guests will love them.
- If you're using a cupcake wedding cake, consider using a small, traditional cake for the top layer. This allows you to use any cake topper you'd like. Then stack the cupcakes in a tree, in tiers, or arranged around the "traditional cake" tier.
- If you don't like the idea above, consider using smaller letters (2.5 inches or less)as a monogram wedding cake topper. The small size helps them to stand up better in the cupcakes, which don't offer much of a base for a big cake topper.
- Taking these cupcake wedding cake ideas one step further, you can also use monogram designs written in icing on your cupcake wedding cake, or alternatively, you can use candy letters.
