Printable wedding invitations are a new option that stretches your budget. But they're not for everyone.
Here's the good, the bad, and the...
Tips. You thought we were going to say ugly, didn't you. Ugly, they are not. However, printable wedding invitations are different from their professionally made counterparts in many ways.
THE GOOD:
- One word, inexpensive. However, don't forget to factor in toner, expensive these days (we admit that we use refills). And you will use more than usual while you print high quality lettering on your printable wedding invitations.
- You are in total control. Also rendered, you are totally responsible. It depends on your viewpoint.
- You can be very creative with your design and layout.
- You may learn more about your computer.
- You may get to practice patience, self control, and controlling your temper.
THE BAD:
- You'll need plenty of time. Not only do you have to figure out what design, wording, and etiquette issues apply to you, but you'll also have to figure out how to make it happen on your computer.
- You will be limited a little bit on the design and font side of things because your computer will not be able to do everything (i.e., raised or engraved lettering, every font) unless you buy more software. (But we're saving money here, so that's a bad option.) This is not a big deal. You'll be able to find something that you like.
- No matter how good you are with your computer (and you don't have to be that good to do this, just determined), it will be a process of trial and error.
- Once you know your design and wording, you still have to fit it properly in the space your card allows-and then get it to print that way.
- Don't forget addressing the envelopes. A printer is handy for this but still there is the trial and error process.

TIPS
- Avoid printable wedding invitations if you are pressed for time.
- Avoid printable wedding invitations if you are easily frustrated - you'll only waste time and money.
- Buy extra invitation paper and envelopes (on top of the extras you'll buy for last minute additions, lost invitations, etc.).
- Consider using www.uprint.com's free templates to create your desired design. This will help eliminate headaches with spacing, centering, and so on. Or...
- Use your own word processing program to get everything just right and then...
- Cut regular paper to the size of your invitations and envelopes. Practice with this before using the expensive paper.
- If printing on glossy paper or vellum, you may have to use a laser printer for best results.
- Invitations and envelopes are different animals. Practice each separately.
- Consider having your invitations done professionally and printing addresses yourself. Addressing costs extra money if professionally done, but is fairly easy to master with your printer. This may be the best of both worlds for you.
