Making mint favor tins as a partial or complete do it yourself wedding project.

We already talked about the way personalized mint favor tins can fit with any theme, style, or budget . And if you want them made for you, you can check out the possibilities at our store. But this is one wedding favor idea that can look great even as a do it yourself project. Since you probably don’t do this very often, we’ll go over a few pointers first.

Mint favor tins like these go well with any theme, color, or budget.

Think about the candy first. What you put in the tins might affect the size of tins that you use. All you’ll learn from this is whether your tins will be larger or smaller. We’ll get shape figured out in a minute.

Once you’ve figured that out, it may seem backwards, but consider the labels. There are two things that brides usually do here. They either have the labels made or they make their own. Fair enough.

There’s a very good reason for thinking about the labels before the tins. You already have a good idea of generally what’s available in mint favor tins – round, square, or rectangle with some variation in rounded edges. And you know already approximately what sizes are out there.

But, the real character of your mint favor tins will come from the labels. This is the part that will match your colors, enhance your theme, carry your unique message, and so on. Because labels are cheap to have made, many brides abandon the project of making their own labels because it can be a little tricky sometimes.

Instead, they have them made. But then they are limited to those designs that will fit the tins that they already bought. If you do some research on labels first and experiment with your own ability to make them, you’ll avoid this hassle if you decide to abandon ship and have them made by someone else.

Our advice is to experiment with making favor labels first. If you don’t have any luck, then look for professional designs that you like next. Once you find one you like, pick tins that will match the size of the labels. Tins are easy to find online and in retail stores, inexpensive, and fairly straightforward when it comes to choice.

This way, you’ll be able to make sure you get the design and wording you want on your labels (pretty important). Then you can find mint favor tins to match the label size later.

If you make your own mint favor tins, you can create your own unique label design.

Next we'll look at the details:

When picking candy, here’s a couple of questions to ask.

  • Will it melt?

  • Do you want the candy to complement any colors in the wedding?

  • Can it be personalized with initials?

  • Do you want to include a limited number of sugar free candies for guests? Make sure it’s easy to tell which is which from the outside.

  • Do you want different types of candy for guests to choose from? Make sure it’s easy to tell which is which again.

For mint favor tins, consider these tips:
  • Look for shape and size to be as you wish to fit the label and candy size.

  • Make sure the lids close easily and stay closed.

  • Do you want clear tops or metal?

  • Does a shiny or brushed metal finish suit your event better?

  • Look for food grade mint favor tins.
Labels
  • Clear, white, or colored?

  • Round, square, oval, rectangle?

  • For clear labels, you’ll probably need a laser printer or the ink may smudge. Also, you’ll need to try the labels out. If you don’t have the right kind of labels, the heat from the laser printer will melt them and may damage your printer. Unless you have a color laser printer, using clear labels will probably limit you to black ink.

  • Inkjet printers do a great job with color and graphics. Most people have these as personal printers so consider using these with white labels.

  • Get labels online from somewhere like www.onlinelabels.com. They have a much bigger selection than most retail stores and they offer templates for several different programs (including Word) that match the label sheets they sell. That way, you can download the template at the same time you order a given size of labels. Then, create your design or text and paste it into the template shapes that match the label sheet and print.

  • If you don’t like the way it turns out, custom favor labels can be cheap. See some of the possibilities on our monograms and labels page.

The great thing about mint favor tins is that you can make them just partially as a do it yourself project. That way you save the frustration of the hard part – making the labels – while picking the other parts individually on your own. So, follow the links below for some possibilities if you need:
