Make your own wedding invitations and make a big difference with the details.

You may want to make your own wedding invitations even if you hadn't considered it before. There literally are lots of things you can do with home made wedding invitations that you can’t do by getting them done professionally without spending a lot of extra money.

As it turns out, do it yourself wedding invitations have become such a big trend that the options have greatly improved and now with printer quality as good as it is – the difference between the appearance of professionally printed wedding invitations and do it yourself wedding invitations is almost indistinguishable.

Let’s dispel the myths for a second first. There is a fear that invitations that you make won’t look good. There are simple ways to keep this from happening so we’ll cover that. Then we’ll talk about some of the cool things you can do if you make your own wedding invitations that can help to carry your theme and even help you with other elements of your wedding planning.

How to make your own wedding invitations that look professional.

We have a whole section that talks about how to make your own wedding invitations from the angle of layout and printing so we’re not going to reinvent the wheel on this page. For the basics, check that page out and then come back here. We will say that there are a few keys to having printable wedding invitations that look professional:

  • Start with good materials – use high quality paper, envelopes, or a printable invitation kit with matching paper, envelopes, sleeves, seals, and so forth.

  • Use a good printer set for the highest quality printing. If you have access to a laser printer, that is absolutely your best option for crisp reproduction of fonts. Inkjets tend to handle color better, but this is probably not a factor for your invitations.

  • Layout – Get formatting software or templates from somewhere like uprint.com. Trying to set up the printing yourself is usually an exercise in frustration without help from programs like these. Once you get it right, test it out on regular paper before you use the expensive stuff.

  • Abandon the idea of raised lettering (thermography). It’s just not an option right now for do it yourself invitations.

How to make your own wedding invitations that make a big difference with the details.

There is an advantage to making your own wedding invitations over getting them professionally made. You can do more with them for a lot less. Here’s why.

When you order professional wedding invitations, you pick a design and coordinate it as best you can with the other elements of your wedding. One of the simplest and most inexpensive ways to make a big difference with a small detail is to have a wedding logo, motif, monogram, or whatever you want to call it that is used throughout your event.

This is very easy and inexpensive to do with do it yourself invitations but very expensive to do if you have it professionally done. Plus, with the do it yourself option, you’ll be able to use the logo on anything else you want to use it on for free. If you have a special wedding logo made for your professional wedding invitations, it’ll cost you a lot more and you’ll have it for your wedding invitations only. Plus, there are lots of ways to do this.

  • If you have access to a good computer graphic program, you can make it yourself and simply print it on your wedding invitations and whatever other stationery items you decide to make at home.

  • You can have a graphics designer make your logo and send it to your computer via email in a high resolution format so you can print it on your printable wedding invitations.

  • You can use a custom stamp to stamp your wedding logo on not just your invitations, but on favor labels, menu cards, place cards, and anywhere else your imagination takes you.

  • You can use a monogram embosser to place your logo or monogram on seals, cards, wedding invitations, envelopes, and a host of other places.

  • You can then complement the monogram or logo you used on your invitations by using it elsewhere – on menu cards, place cards, favor labels, custom monogram cake toppers (cheaper than many traditional toppers), and so on.

With all of these options, you may want to make your own wedding invitations even if you’re not worried about budgets. The fact is, you have lots more control and can make much more creative wedding invitations with less compromise than if you went the traditional route.

Don’t get us wrong. There are tons of fantastic professionally made wedding invitations. Our goal is simply to help you make a big difference with the small details while saving money and having fun. For that purpose, making your own wedding invitations is a great option.
